How much of a ripoff are home warranties?

People pay a monthly fee and then a service call fee (about $100) for coverage of various systems in a house. Like insurance, if you just pay every month and never use it, it is a rip. The warranty company, like your insurance company, can decide to not pay for a repair for various reasons.
You are better off putting the monthly fee into an emergency bank account and just saving that money up for when a pipe breaks or the AC goes on the blink. Pay a contractor directly for repairs rather than have a warranty company choose the contractor and then having to deal with 2 parties instead of one.

And do they use depreciation to get out of paying?
