Is $17,000 enough to move out?

I may not be a lot but I was just curious. That’s my estimate of what I have. I do help my dad pay the bills and stuff says it’s really hard right now inland rent is like really high. My best friend said, “Not if we get roommates to help pay rent and you need to stop depending on you dad for an answer and be an adult. He isn’t going to be around forever. Be a grown up and move out of daddy’s house!” Shows us how much she knows. She needs to understand that rent is so high right now. My estimate is $6000 in my checking account and $11000 in savings. I will NOT tell you my real amount I have. I am a teacher’s assistant so I don’t make much.

Well, it depends. Each place you look at might be different.
I've rented apartments in different cities whenever I move around. And even within the same cities the property managers have different things they look for.
Some are simply ok with a good credit history and proof of enough money to pay rent for 6 months. Some want to see a paystub for proof you make double or triple the rent cost(whatever they are expecting) Some don't care as long you have good credit history or get a cosigner.
With how rent costs have risen over the past year, make sure you check around so you aren't paying more then you should. I don't know where in the world you live, so I don't have much advice beyond that. Ask a friend who has experience renting apartments and maybe they can give you more specific advice.

Good luck!

@Scribbles thanks. Some people told me I don’t have enough

@ElizabethBabe1994 Don't be discouraged. Just go out and look at a few places and find out. You don't have to sign a lease. Prices for apartments can vary wildly.

Don’t spend your savings if it’s in an ira. You’ll have to pay 10% in taxes to the irs. Use the $6000 and just keep saving, but be careful with how you spend. Look for cheap rent like $300-$500 a month in a safe area. $6000 won’t go far, but you already have a job so you have that going for you.

@ElizabethBabe1994 I’m sorry, I misread your response. What would rent with your friend cost plus utilities? You’d be best to move in with a friend, that makes life much easier.

@MrAboo Yeah I have no excuse not to move out. She did say I’m the only one she can trust even though there’s another girlfriend she trust but she lives in another state. I don’t know what to do. Rent is high though. My friend said to stop being close minds and there’s rent for lower than $500 and I need to leave my dads house and he won’t be around forever. I mean she’s right but money is tight.

@ElizabethBabe1994 it’s hard to leave family I understand that, I had to leave family for career aspirations, but found I like my freedom, wish I had a friend irl to rent an apartment with, but maybe one day.

I’d suggest you start looking with your friend and even visiting apartments you know the two of you can afford. Money might be tight but we all gotta be willing to take the leap at some point

Not really but then again it depends where you live and what you’re looking for. There’s rent for under $1000. You really gotta LOOK. You should consider moving out and have your friend as a roommate. She has a point I mean, what are you going to do when your dad is gone? If she asks you again, who are you going to depend on? If you think YOU are ready, then YOU GO! You’re an adult! I make about $22,000 a year and my cousin and I split the rent. Have an open mind.
