FIFTY YEARS
My wife and I will celebrate a 50 year anniversary this year and I wrote a poem in commemoration of it. This poem is simple in its construction, but has so many truths contained inside. A perfect marriage i\s said to be
made from two imperfect people who refuse to give up.
That is all there is. There are no secrets that will hold you together. You simply decide you are in it for the long haul. Too many people enter into relationships today already prepared for when it fails. That seems to be a preconceived notion that you have no faith in it working out. There will be issues and fights. You will violently disagree on many items, You have to let go of the idea that you have to be right all the time. You have to be in love and you have to have mutual respect.
FIFTY YEARS
By Edward York
I have thought a lot,
In recent days.
About why we lasted,
What are the ways?
At a time,
When so many split;
We lasted because,
We didn’t quit.
It seems so obvious,
Most cannot see.
The way you last,
Is not to flee.
