I always thought he must have been born around easter time (ironically), as it was clearly warm enough for sheep to be out in the fields, for the shepherds to be out watching them when the angels appeared.
And as LadyGrace says, if you're going to celebrate the birth of the redeemer at some point in the year, around the time of the longest night (21st December) makes the most sense, because it's about the hope in the coming of new light. It's not even convenience so much as it's poetically beautiful IMO
It's why I think Christians in the southern hemisphere ought to do as most neopagans do, and move the calendar by 6 months. Christmas doesn't have to be snow and tinsel but I think is intimately connected to the time of darkness each year.
