Most children are brought up that way. Some families are at least a little bit restrained about it, and they try to teach their children the reason for the season...but my own Mother always went waaay overboard.
That establishes a tradition which parents would do well to curb. Having the materialism faucet shut off later in life then becomes extremely painful...sort of like being put on a diet against your will.
