@scrood I think you're missing the point that this was an advert on television in the UK where the Church of England is strongly connected to the State.
@ArtieKat advertisements aren't for the state. If you want them on your side, you have to buy their support, not launch an ad campaign. Ads are for the people, many of whom aren't Christian or remotely interested in associating with Christianity.
@NerdyPotato We will have to agree to differ. The period in late December in most of Europe - and North America for that matter - has been known as Christmas for hundreds of years. I have Jewish ancestry and I don't know of anyone in real life who objects to the term "Christmas".
@ArtieKat I don't know anyone who objects to the term Christmas for the holiday that's called that either. Some just acknowledge there are other holidays in that period too and sadly I do know plenty of people advocating to ignore and exclude those for no obvious reason.
@NerdyPotato Exactly. Hardly anyone in the UK goes to church regularly any more. Churches are closing down from a drop in congregation as the older generation dies off
@Fluffybull I honestly don't get it. Holidays include Christmas. Saying that takes nothing away from Christmas. Calling it Christmas however ignores all other holidays. It's one thing to only focus on one particular holiday yourself, but getting upset about other people and companies acknowledging other things on top of Christmas? That makes no sense at all.
@ArtieKat Significant and a majority, but nobody is advocating to exclude them. But 40.7% ticking something else is significant too. Why do you advocate for discrediting those?
@NerdyPotato I object to all forms of euphemism like "bathroom" for a room where the is no bath or shower but simply a lavatory. People who work in Catering, for example, don't get holidays over Christmas. Perhaps they might be offended by "Happy Holidays"?
@ArtieKat there is no euphemism in saying holidays though. It's a different term that covers more than Christmas alone. Your argument for people working in catering is a whole different issue. Having to work doesn't mean they can't be happy, but even if they can't see that, they'd be just as offended being wished a merry Christmas.
@ArtieKat Jesus of Nazareth was likely born in the Spring. Christians co-opted pagan holidays routinely. The cultural appropriation was done by Christians long ago.
@ArtieKat Ya realize lavatory is just the basin by the latin word root, so maybe lavatory and crappertororium would more accurately describe rather than the euphemism (by your logic) of a word that just describes the wash basin.... Just sayin' 😏
