Can We Combine This With Indigenous Peoples' Day?

Columbus Was A Horrible Person

Based on historical accounts, Christopher Columbus exhibited numerous instances of cruelty and brutality towards the indigenous peoples he encountered during his voyages. Here are some examples:

Enslavement and Massacre:
Columbus and his crew enslaved thousands of natives, forcing them to work under harsh conditions. He also ordered the massacre of many others, including women and children, for minor infractions or perceived disobedience.

Rape and Sexual Exploitation:
There are documented cases of Columbus and his men raping indigenous women, including accounts from eyewitnesses and Columbus’s own crew members.

Cruel Punishments:
Columbus punished natives severely for even minor offenses, including flogging, branding, and mutilation.

Forced Labor and Starvation:
Columbus and his crew forced natives to work long hours without pay, leading to widespread starvation and disease.

Columbus’s Treatment of His Own Crew:
Columbus also exhibited poor leadership and mistreated his own crew members, leading to:

Mutiny:
Columbus’s brother, Bartolomé, led a revolt against him due to his harsh treatment of the crew and the natives.

Crew Members’ Accounts:
Many crew members wrote about Columbus’s cruelty and brutality in their journals and letters, providing firsthand accounts of his behavior.

Calm down randy marsh…

I bet you didn’t mind Christopher Columbus before the world went woke 🤓
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout I knew this about Columbus when I was a kid. I never could understand why we had a holiday in his honor.

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout People don't know Jack about Columbus...
The point tho is that he found something that wasn't previously known and it turned into something big. No one cares what kind of person he was. Just like no one cares what kind of person Trump is. His stumbling onto the Americas led to something big and that, friend, is what he is remembered for.
@Spoiledbrat Your point is well-taken. It's just too bad what he is remembered for buried his atrocities.
@PhoenixPhail I always thought it was weird that we celebrated Columbus Day and I never gave it much thought. Teachers woukd always bring it up when I was in elementary school.
Yeah, in the eyes of many he is and did what you cite here.
As horrific and wrong his actions were, we need to look at world history where many of the things he is accused of were actions taken by others under the monikers of Kings, Queens, Presidents, Tsars and “
Leaders”. That said, Columbus was not unique.

No

Columbus was a navigator that wanted to explore. The only crew he could get was a bunch of vagrants and criminals that constantly mutinied and locked him up below deck.

The Santa Maria crashed into rocks at the shore of Hispaniola (Haiti) and they used that lumber to build a fort. When Columbus sailed back to Spain, 30 men had to stay behind. Upon his return, they found the Indigenous people killed all 30 men....

On his 4th journey, he was not even permitted to land at Hispaniola

And correct, he never got any closer to the USA than Panama...

He didn't own much, when Queen Isabella died, he was stripped of most everything he had and died in obscurity.

Do you really want to associate indigenous people with Columbus? 🤷🏻‍♂

Give them at least their own day.

Somebody had to do it 🤷

Well you can give away your property and belongings to indigenous people and live somewhere else
