Christopher Columbus' true motivations

Everyone already knows that Christopher Columbus was a genocidal maniac, so there's no point in going into detail. What many people don't know is that he was under strict orders from King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to not "bother or upset" the Native Americans, and certainly not to enslave them and force them to mine gold for Columbus to steal. There was a prohibition at that time against enslaving Christians, and the goal was to convert the Natives to Christianity, so oppressing them would have been counterproductive.

What's lesser known is the real purpose of Columbus' voyage. It was not, as commonly thought, merely to find a faster route to China for the space trade. Following the Ottoman's capture of Constantinople in 1453, the Silk Road was closed to Europeans. On top of that, the Mamluks had controlled Jerusalem since defeating the Mongols in 1260, and would not be ousted by the Ottomans until 1516. Marco Polo had described the Great Khan as amenable to Christianity. There was also an old legend of Prester John, a Christian king in the far east. Columbus' dream was to convert the Great Khan to Christianity, find Prester John, and convince them to join the Europeans on a crusade to liberate the Holy Land. His explorations were primarily motivated by religion, although he did negotiate one-tenth of any proceeds from spice or gold for himself. Columbus was eventually recalled to Spain when reports of his brutality toward the Natives reached the crown.

Although the Italian peninsula was known by that name, Columbus wouldn't have thought of himself as "Italian" as the country of Italy did not exist at that time. He was from Genoa and would have considered himself Genoese. His native language was not Italian, but Ligurian, which had significant influence from French.

Columbus was a Christian, yes, but not perfect.

, Columbus wrote about his love for Jesus Christ and his gratitude for God’s forgiveness –
“I am only a most unworthy sinner, but ever since I have cried out for grace and mercy from the Lord, they have covered me completely. I have found the most delightful comfort in making it my whole aim in life to enjoy his marvelous presence.”
@Carazaa The man was a monster. Writing pretty words doesn't absolve someone of that.

And that says someone about the kind of "Christian" you admire if you think genocide can be forgiven by writing pretty words and showing up for church one day a weak.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow Don't slander and gossip!
@Carazaa Again, pretty words mean nothing. Talk is cheap. His actions are those of a monster. The fact you are bending over backwards to defend evil also speaks volumes.
@Carazaa It is not slander. It is true.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow You are gossiping! Shameful!

@Carazaa yeah, cool, him writing pretty words on a page and praising his favourite literary figure doesn't change the murder torture and genocide of my ancestors.
@Carazaa Calling you out for what you are is not gossip. You are justifying a mass murderer and the man who almost single handedly erased a culture and created the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

Hitler also had some pretty words to say about Christians and Jesus so I guess that is all forgiven too by your logic here.
Carazaa · F
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow Shameful! Columbus was not a mass murderer, he was a Christian. Hitler was like Trump a hateful, murderer and a liar!
@Carazaa Take the beam out of your own eye.
Carazaa · F
@Carazaa Again, I am not the one trying to justify the atrocities of a monster.
Carazaa · F
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow He was far from a monster! You are a monster for your gossip!
@Carazaa That is a denial on the level of delusion. That is all he was. A fanatic who used religion as an excuse to spread death and suffering. And you seem determined to justify it and pretend he was anything but human garbage.

Writing pretty words doesn't change any of that.

It has been awhile since I was in church but I don't recall Jesus praising mass murderers.
basilfawlty89 · 36-40, M
@Carazaa are you denying that under his orders, Native Americans were tortured, killed and robbed?
Carazaa · F
@basilfawlty89

I think it's a total lie that Columbus did that. Native Americans didn't like him because he was witnessing to them about Jesus, and they lied about him I am sure! Just as people lie about true Christians today! I believe he is in the history books because God put him there as a missionary and a great influencer for Christianity! God will exalt a nation that honors him.

"Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD"

God blesses, and he curses! America prospered because Christians honored Jesus in this country! Some people were hateful OfCourse and that is never ok. But not christians! And I believe he was one. I am for loving all people and treating them equal. I am for witnessing Jesus.
basilfawlty89 · 36-40, M
@Carazaa you're calling an entire race liars, because you don't like that some people can be false "Christians" and murder people. His atrocities were well documented, both by indigenous people and by the Spaniards.

You are a racist for calling an entire race liars.
Carazaa · F
@basilfawlty89 No I think they are ignorant. they were not there. We should never gossip!
basilfawlty89 · 36-40, M
@Carazaa there were there. Those were written by Native Americans and Spaniards at the time. It's rich of you calling others ignorant, but dismiss a whole genocided race's writings.

Also, didn't you once claim Catholics aren't Christians? Columbus was Catholic.
Carazaa · F
@basilfawlty89 Columbus was not killing people! That is a lie!
@Carazaa It's possible he had a Christian confession and also committed great crimes against others.
@Carazaa Columbus was far from perfect. He was viewed as a genocidal monster by his own contemporaries. You should read his own accounts of his exploits and what others such as Las Casas said about him. Columbus has literally no redeeming features. He's hardly the example of a Christian that you should be promoting.

The historical record shows that he forced the Natives to mine gold for him at swordpoint, and allowed his soldiers to rape and kill at their pleasure. He also didn't "witness" to the Natives as it was illegal to enslave Christians, so he had to prevent them from converting. Plus, he was a Catholic. You've made it clear on here many times that you don't consider Catholics to be Christians.
Carazaa · F
@LeopoldBloom The tribes were warring and killing each other and enslaving each other well before Colombus came! sorry I don't at all believe that he was worse than them. I believe they lied! And he was a humble Christian witnessing and he apologized for any wrong! He was a great man!
@Carazaa The atrocities against the indigenous Taíno we're documented by Bartolomé de las Casas, who was a Dominican friar. He participated in them first hand and later confessed what he had seen and been complicit to.
Carazaa · F
@CopperCicada I believe that Columbus was not a murderer. I believe many others were! And the natives were also violent. Columbus was there to witness to them.
