The "Hispanic Heritage" month

Just a random 30days that starts in the middle of September and ends in the middle of October or something weird like that, America has decided to "celebrate" Hispanic people. It really grinds my gears!! As a Cuban and Panamanian woman darker skin is very underrepresented in this Hispanic "month"! They make everyone look the same and it's irritating. Like way to be inclusive but not though🙄

Ah well. It's actually been a great day so I guess I just gotta take the lemons and trade the for apples😊

It's political. Black History month is the only one of those months which was sort of organic I guess.
Blacks helped to build this country in everyway and in most places of education their history and achievements were left out of that education so the idea to educate at least one month a year was started.

Hispanic history month started in 1989 and was montly only a way to try to be equal about everything for the political leaders of each group of people wanting to have a month also.
There is some good in it so that young Hispanics feel that they are truly part of the US and to educate on the best and brightest.

Quite a few Latin people were instrumental in US history (not in a large voting,fighting block as blacks) but back in the days none of those people would have considered themselves Hispanic anyway.
They probably would have called themselves Native American or Spanish or criollo.

As for you being Afro Latina its just not a big enough group in the USA and Afro Latinos are underrepresented in your own Latin media and entertainment so I wouldn't expect better here from the US.
But you have to take part in spreading that awareness.
I've seen Youtube channels such as Pero Like and artists such as Amara La Negra do this.

The avg public dosen't care about Hispanic Heritage month too much.

@REMsleep When I worked in a public office I’d occasionally see birth certificates. In California they listed people born before 1970 as
“Caucasian, Spanish surname” or “Negro, Spanish surname” to indicate white and black U.S. born Latinx.

@REMsleep Yeah I get it, and I think I knew that, just every once in a while I come across it and then get let down all over again. Not like my whole day has stopped but it's like " oh..well that kinda sucks" I guess I should take on more of an awareness approach to it...maybe once things have kinda settled out in my personal life I can implement something small that I can do to raise awareness..
