Did any of you see the Barbie movie?

Not only was the movie, stupid and over politicized, which is weird because I was under the impression that it was a kids movie. I really don’t think that it was. I think that the audience was geared more towards millennials.

I kid you not during the movie the teenager confronts Barbie and calls her a fascist

I was half asleep watching it and woke up thinking WTF

No, but I am not surprised to hear of this.

Lemme guess...Barbie is a "girlboss" who needs to battle the "patriarchy" less they oppress Barbie.

Ken is well meaning, but ultimately an idiot who needs to be led around by the nose by Barbiue, lest he engage in "problematic" behavior.

I'm sure there were queer and/or non binary characters in the movie as well...

Be thankful you still have the sense to see these things and question them, many people do not.

@SumKindaMunster this is my issue with the movie

As a mother yes Barbie was a big part of my childhood but I’m grown now. Idgaf about Barbies anymore. I’m 29 my oldest is 11. I did genuinely loved Barbie’s growing up. It was fun getting to live out your fake life throughout Barbie’s various careers and whatever the heck she was doing

But I did feel like the message was directed towards older audiences specially career oriented women that DONT WANT/have children. which I thought was strange because it was almost portrayed as a movie for kids. Or at least people who like Barbie (which would be young girls). So to me that message was a little strange and contradictory. They even referred to pregnant Barbie (a collective item that was later discontinued) and the teenager said “that’s weird why would they make that”
I personally had that Barbie and the whole family. I loved it. And the little tiny babies were so cute

Also at one point the whole message was embrace individuality, but yet they basically bullied, weird Barbie, and only used her when they needed something to me, which was weird and contradictory to the whole message of what the movie was supposed to be conveying
“ be individual” “ no not that way”

So when you’re watching this movie and you see a teenager causally throwing around terms that she doesn’t even truly understand the meaning to it’s a problem. They criticized, capitalism and mentioned the patriarchy multiple times.

It almost comes off as didactic or ideologically loaded
Wasn’t it satire? I enjoyed it.

@Notladylike i genuinely loved it when it wasn’t being political

I thought they did a really good job with the aesthetics and the way they included all of the old Barbie’s even the ones that got discontinued. I thought that was so neat. I actually had pregnant Barbie. I loved her 😭
no but someone said gosling understood the assignment.. and was very funny

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout Gosling must be a Ken Doll in real life as well, if you know what I mean.

During the time it was out some hack plastic surgeon had a package special where he’d transform you into Barbie. Every tabloid was pushing it

I suppose the Ken transformation was much cheaper - merely a pair of pruning shears to the package
