It was a long time ago—early in the 500s, during the Gothic siege of Rome. I remember living near the Colosseum, gripped by fear as the city was under attack. The Goths were relentless, and survival felt uncertain. In a desperate bid for safety, I climbed into my bathtub, pulled a blanket over myself, and stayed there, waiting for the danger to pass. Somehow, I made it through. Fifteen hundred years later, I can say this with confidence: the bathtub saved my life.
