The invading Persians misspelled 'Hindu' to refer to the culture across the 'Sindhu' river, also known as the Indus River. It is simply a collective name for a culture, not a religion.
The Indians never identified as 'Hindus'. The word was coined by foreigners, as previously mentioned.
So, what does it mean to be Hindu? Absolute freedom to hold whatever beliefs you desire. Nobody bothers.
