Don't you think that people with some disease are better off dead than alive ?

Serious question.

People who have myopathy for example, they can't move, they can't study, they can't talk. All they do is breathe. I mean...Is this what living a life is ? They must be living hell.

I mean incurable disease than keep you from living a proper life since the first day.

A cousin of mine just died, and he had myopathy. And everyone is so sad, everyone but me. I honestly think that he's better where he is now, he wasn't living...

I don't disagree, but I do think that it could lead to wholesale disposal of all people who are inconveniently incapacitated.

@greenmountaingal: I will.
Thank you !

GreenMountainGal@ I agree with this and also with Serentree's answer....when you legal euthanasia it becomes a slippery slope to get rid of people who may be a "bother" to society to care for....where will it end?
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@cherokeepatti: the HMOs and the insurance companies would love it. Euthanasia is a whole lot cheaper than hospice care.

Seriously, yes, I'd like to see anyone with that sort of extreme wasting disease have the option to step out when they want, rather than having to wait til it decides to take you. Same with ppl with stage 4 cancers - there's a point where you're better off not continuing treatment but letting go and having a good death, not a terrible one.

Most people are not aware of the major progress that has occurred in recent years in pain management, both in terms of new drugs and much better hospital policies. When people think about pain and dying, they usually think of people they have known, or heard about from friends, who were suffering greatly; often these memories go back to childhood or many years ago when pain of this type was not handled very well. During the last 15-20 years, much has changed regarding how doctors treat intractable pain and terminal illness. It is no longer necessary to die in pain and misery if the pain is being properly managed. Palliative care is becoming the norm for some illnesses in old age.

@greenmountaingal: I'm not talking about dying in pain or not. I'm speaking about the difference between being alive and living your life.

@ArwenPandora: As many seriously handicapped and people in limiting situations know, one can still have a good life even with a lot of pain and limitation. And many people become very depressed in hospital situations but later are glad they stayed alive even with paralysis, pain, deformity and injuries. It is hard to make a wise decision about when someone's life becomes not worth living.

Yeah, euthanasia should be legalised
ArwenPandora · 26-30, F
Yes, but under some circumstances.
Or else, every depressed person would go for it.

@ArwenPandora: I'm more concerned about fed up caregivers deciding to end their suffering

@Serenitree: Knowing how people in hospitals are nowadays, that wouldn't surprise me...
I agree completely. There is a huge misconception between 'being alive' and 'living'.
ArwenPandora · 26-30, F
Yes, exactly.
Being alive and living is not the same.
And it must be hell to see everyone but you '' living '' when you're just there '' alive ''.
Mirania · 26-30, M
That is up to the person tbh
ArwenPandora · 26-30, F
I'm not encouraging suicide or something,huh !
It's just an opinion.
But yeah, of course it's up to the person.
But for example, while I worked as a benevole in a little hospital, where I read books to sick people.
There was a guy, I don't even know what sickness he had, but he didn't want me to read to him. He'd just cry, and tell me how much he'd love to die because he never could go to school, play football...Etc
It's was really sad, and I didn't know what to say...
Mirania · 26-30, M
I volunteered at an assistant living center and a guy was paralyzed from the head down and wished he could play tennis again, yeah....
