What's a good way to clean out an electric toothbrush head?

I do change it every 3-4 months as recommended, but gunk still builds up on the inside part of the removable head after about a month. I try rinsing it out with water and poking at the gunk with the sharp end of a floss pick, but I feel this isn't the best method.

I used to have one of these with the same problem, never did figure it out before it stopped taking a charge. Back to regular manual brushes now.

Oh. I still like my electric toothbrush, so I'll probably just buy another if this one gives out on me. I'm sure I can find another one for $40 when I need to.
