What's a good way to clean out an electric toothbrush head?

I do change it every 3-4 months as recommended, but gunk still builds up on the inside part of the removable head after about a month. I try rinsing it out with water and poking at the gunk with the sharp end of a floss pick, but I feel this isn't the best method.

I just change the head.

But then I'd be changing the head after only a month, and each head is $10, so I'll probably try the other suggestions listed by others first.

@hiddenkitty: yeah not worth it, in that case buy a regular toothbrush or it will cost you thousands of bucks in the end
