is there any chance of me being a good long distance runner?

So I want to be a good runner because all my friends are athletic and i feel left behind a lot. I definitely dont have any genes helping me out here. No one in my family for generations has wanted to be an athlete and has really tried to become one. I dont want to pursue this any farther than just being able to be more fit i guess. Some of my friends dont even have to try. The have a really fast metabolism and are really skinny and can run really well. Im not really. I missed the early life stage where its really easy to morph your body into an ectomorph. Im more on the endomorph side. I do things all the time and am fairly active but just am not very good at doing long distances. The most i can do and keep a conversation going is an 800 meter jog pace. I most definitely consume less calories than i burn. i dont really eat in big meals and i usually have things like apples and stuff if i get hungry. Right now i just dont really feel comfortable with my body. I feel like im too fat. I talked to one of my friends about this and they told me that they gave up long distance running for the discuss and other events similar to that because their body was more suited to that. I did some research online and found that the way to change your body type from more of an endomorph to an ectomorph is to do a ton of cardio workouts like running, biking, etc. What should i do? I know i post a lot more serious things here than the majority of people but this is the only place online i feel comfortable asking things like this.

but do what. it seems that if you want to have a very slim body thats good for long distance you have to just be born that way.
