Why do so many Brits have bad teeth?

This is not a criticism, it is merely an observation and a question. As I view an abundance of documentaries on Netflix, I've noticed how many Brits on those docs have crooked and/or stained, missing teeth. Does the national health service not cover dentistry? Is there no such thing as orthodontics in the UK? Or, are Americans just overly concerned about how their teeth look?

There's a difference between healthy teeth and "good looking" teeth. I don't doubt that most everyone would want healthy teeth. All you have to do is develop a toothache to know that.

Here's a related question: is teeth whitening a very big deal in the UK?

Another American preoccupation.

@StandardIndividual:
I'm lead to believe that whitening teeth can be damaging over the long term, especially if the products used are the cheap Internet rip off type
