Why do so many Brits have bad teeth?

This is not a criticism, it is merely an observation and a question. As I view an abundance of documentaries on Netflix, I've noticed how many Brits on those docs have crooked and/or stained, missing teeth. Does the national health service not cover dentistry? Is there no such thing as orthodontics in the UK? Or, are Americans just overly concerned about how their teeth look?

Why do so many Russians have bad teeth?.. teeth are not a priority for the Russians.. it's funny you pick on the Brits teeth.. the Russians have way worse teeth.. even some models have teeth that are gammy.

@MightyAphrodite: I must say that it may take me awhile to get over your statement that Russian models have gammy teeth. But I guess I asked for it.

@LedRobster: I was friends with one, she told me herself, that Russians won't pay to have the gap in their teeth fixed... that they don't care about such things..
They'd need to have pretty bad teeth for them to deal with them.

@MightyAphrodite: Yes. George Washington had false wooden teeth and he was representative of the bourgeoisie class of early America. (Maybe we can make this a class-consciousness discussion?)

There's a difference between healthy teeth and "good looking" teeth. I don't doubt that most everyone would want healthy teeth. All you have to do is develop a toothache to know that.

Here's a related question: is teeth whitening a very big deal in the UK?

Another American preoccupation.

@StandardIndividual:
I'm lead to believe that whitening teeth can be damaging over the long term, especially if the products used are the cheap Internet rip off type

The NHS only offers free dental care for people on benefits. To go to a private dentist is expensive and actually very hard to get registered at one. However I think most of us British do have healthy teeth. I know I do.

Thank you for your reasonable answer. ☺

You're saying the English have more financial issues? From the sound of things our dental coverage is the same.
LedRobster · 61-69, M
@BarefootRoss: Maybe it's a characteristic of the older generation? I can see why the immediate post-WWII generation might not have that concern. It had bigger things to worry about.

It's a cliche, I think perpetuated in recent times by the Austin Powers movies.

free health care is not always free
LedRobster · 61-69, M
That's certainly true.

What do you mean, oh brother? It's a valid question.

I'm sure this problem is in many parts of the world. I'm from the country and they say "hillbillies" have bad teeth too, which in come cases is true. Especially the ones way out in the sticks, they are poor and can't afford health insurance, not to mention a car.

Dentistry has to be paid for in the UK, it is not free at all.

I've noticed this too

Americans are concerned about their teeth but apparently not their weight.

Lol
Ehhh glad I'm not British.
I always thought this was just a stereotype. But when I did visit London, admittedly I wasn't staring at folks' teeth. 🙂
