maybe he could try some kratom. its a powerful pain relieving herb that is also good for inflammation. it is fiber though. (it's usually taken as powdered leaf) not sure if his intestinal ailments can stand a lot of fiber. i have heard some people make it into tea.

@Penny It says it is banned in some states in the USA but doesn't say which. Apparently it is a tree. The mayo clinic website also mentions it can cause muscle pain, which is his problem, and it can cause liver damage, which he already has.
But I will send him the website link. Thank you for the suggestion!

@4meAndyou kratom has been commonly used as a painkiller in Thailand for at least a century. I've never experienced muscle pain with it though when I first started taking it it made me a little itchy feeling and I did get some mild joint pain but only for a brief time. the pain relieving and mood lifting effects far outweigh any side effects though. besides of course the reported liver damage but I think that report was based on a guy that took a really excessive amount and may have had tainted kratom. eta- the FDA wa strying to ban it awhile ago so don't believe all the negative propaganda. it can be mildly addictive though so fair warning there. its related to the coffee family of plants.
