Yes, it's extremely effective and considered the first line of defense against the virus. But we always tend to forget the inconvenient parts of recommendations. It's not "ban plastic bottles;" it's "reduce, reuse...then recycle."
It's not "hit that hand gel when you get home." A thorough washing of hands with soap and water is the primary suggestion.
What the soap does is destroy the outer wall of each virus cell, so it dies, essentially. It's really simply to avoid passing and contracting this virus; we simply always want the easiest way out.
