How have you dealt with adult ADD?

I'm in my late 30s and have had attention and focus issues all of my life. Ive always started new projects with so much excitement and literally will lose that excitement the same day. Needless to say, the project doesn't get finished. I'm a talented writer and artist. I can be extremely creative. But I never finish anything. When I read, I have to read the same sentence or paragraph over and over for it to stick. I start jobs with so many goals in mind, but quickly lose those dreams and goals to the depths of my mind. I'm so tired of this. I need find a way to deal with this or my life will have been wasted. I've pretty much shut down from trying anything new. This isn't the way I'm supposed to live. Are there any medications or ANYTHING that may help? And I don't have the hyper part of that. But do I? My anxiety is horrible...

I have been dealing with it for many years from childhood. Didn't even know what it was called back then. I deal with it by breaking things up into simple goals and tasks. I don't always follow through and still get distracted but I try to get things finished even after I am totally board with it. Even if I go back years later. I don't take meds for it because I just don't like taking anything like that. It can be rough at times. Just my thoughts.

@rjc36 That is wonderful. It really sounds like you've gotten a bit of a hold on it. Thank you for your suggestion. It's definitely something I will try.

@Mdawn79 I don't know if you believe in God or not but if you do ask him for help dealing with it.

I also have ADD, I drink 1 mug of coffee in the morning as an alternative to Ritilan, but I know that has side effects with anxiety, I also take an antidepressant, but it took some trial & error to find the right dose of the right antidepressant, definitely see a GP.

There's supposed to be medication that supposedly helps some, but may not help everyone. Did this ever get misdiagnosed as dyslexia, I wonder?
Mdawn79 · 41-45, F
@sometimeslonelytoo No, I don't have a problem with that. It's a focus issue when reading.

I would write your goal on a piece of paper and anytime you get sidetract read the paper and drop whatever you are thinking about and just focus on completing what you have written down.

start slowly and complete one task at a time. concentration and focus is the goal here. Start one job and finish it and that should be your goal.

There are several medications that might help, from cognition enhancing meds to stimulants which work differently on ADD people to antidepressants. The standard of treatment is talk therapy with a professional in conjunction with medication. In the meantime, simply do your best to find work arounds or different methods of task completion and focus. Good luck.

@Dusty101 really it's just people that weren't diagnosed until adulthood, but have had it since childhood.
