If you are a diabetic how do you keep your sugar in check?

As a new diabetic, I'm not sure what to eat or not eat. Even doctors seem unsure. I got different answers from different doctors. Spent four days in a hospital after falling and could not get up because my sugar was way too low.

The biggest mistake new diabetics make is thinking that sugar alone is responsible for glucose levels. In fact, it's carbs you need to look out for. Especially simple carbs. So while fruit is healthier than candy, it may be just as high and sugar for you. Check out a national diabetic association online and they can be very helpful. Exercise has been demonstrated to make a very strong impact in a positive way, too.

@Graylight Thanks, right after I bought pears, apples. I'm at the trial and error stage. I'll try a diabetic association. Doctors I talked to couldn't give me eat don't eat list. Thanks for helping.

@GunSmoke9 Look for any list on the internet titled glycemic index. That should give you a list a foods ranked best to worst (or worst to) with regard to how they will affect your glucose levels. It's really handy for cooking, snacking and stuff like that. Good luck.

And don't worry about the fruit. Just keep it in reasonable servings.

@Graylight Thanks, I'll do more research today. I don't even want to discuss politics feeling how I do.

@GunSmoke9 😕

It's okay. This is a completely manageable condition and you'll get the hang of it. And the politics aren't going anywhere...

@Graylight Hope you are right. Who says a Looney leftist and a right wing nut job can't get along? I'm making gunsmoke great again.
