I was a Vicodin addict. Now I need much too much adderall to function. Is there a way I can still use enough to work but not overuse?

Addiction is addiction. The substance is incidental. I think you probably know that.

@SW-User I have grown to understand that. It also means that I will always be addicted to something though right?

@Genieinabottle There are differing schools of thought on this, but all the empirical research indicates that, yes, once an addict always an addict. Many think this is because it's not the substance that matters but the brain of the individual. Addicts have been shown to lack in dopamine and have imbalances in other neurotransmitters. This causes certain characteristics, like impulsivity, recklessness, insatiability and the need to buttress our brain with outside chemicals. What's more, is they seem to actually metabolize addictive chemicals differently than "normal" bodies.

So if not Vicodin, Adderall. If not those, alcohol or cocaine or something else. It's not a death sentence, though. It just takes adopting patterns of living that protect from harm.

Alcohol would be so much easier because it is sociologically accepted.

@Genieinabottle To a point. Rarely are addicts in any capacity welcomed by many.

@SW-User the only reason I have been able to hide my addiction from everyone except my wife for so long is my position. Being a Doctor I know all the other doctors who will write for whatever. You ask them for. It's still harder than popping down to the package store though.
