Happy or content: Which would you rather be?

I would submit:

Happiness can only be achieved in the here and now, in the moment, so to speak, and is forever a fleeting emotion, often momentarily felt by achieving a goal.

Conversely, contentment is a constant, a sense and feeling of well-being, peacefulness, gratitude, and satisfaction, and comes solely from within.

You can be happy and not content, but you can be content and I would say, be almost guaranteed moments of happiness.

What are your thoughts?
I'll take content, in that case
Happiness is a relative emotion....and by its nature, transient, fleeting .
One cannot sustain it. It is finite.
It's also self defeating: be happy too much or for too long and you can't feel it anymore.

So you need more to be happy.

Therefore the pursuit of it is self defeating :
Find it ....only to lose it - and then be unhappy about it till you find it again ....over and over.

Ill take content any day.... happiness is a fleeting feeling, contentment lasts beyond circumstances

@Kstrong Exactly.

I would prefer happiness. I agree it is fleeting. I agree it pairs with sadness. Contentment is a constant. Agreed. But given the choice, i prefer change to monotony. The still waters of a lake as seen from the shore are peaceful but attract me less than the waves of the ocean on a beach.
I prefer happiness. Like the morning sunrise rarher than perpetual twilight.
Ontheroad · M
@WandererTony I think I understand, but content is anything but a perpetual twilight and much more akin to low-key happiness without the endorphin rush that so quickly vanishes.
WandererTony · 56-60, M
@Ontheroad a twilight is indeed a low key happiness 🙂 Dont you love the dawn?
The sunrise is a greater visual delight but does not last. The day is longer but limited in length with so many shades of moods. Til the night takes over.
However, analogies may be inaccurate. My point was that swinging changes are better than stillness.
Theres a song in my native language that says that it is better to have one day of love and then death than a loveless lifetime. Something similar 🙂
I’ve been faced with these choices in the past. Not an easy choice. Our instinct is to choose happiness. It takes more conscious choice from us to choose contentment.

From the standpoint of knowing the past, i would be inclined to choose contentment.

@CookieCrumbs I've often thought (when asked if I'm happy), that I'm not and that bothered me... quite a lot. But, when I finally realized how content I've become, I realized happiness, while similar to contentment, is usually a fleeting moment and filled with elusive expectations. It's those expectations that, when unfulfilled, tend to shatter us. Now I'm thrilled to feel content and just accept whatever happiness comes along.
@Ontheroad
And those are the expectations that we will remain happy in the exact same way and intensity. Life doesn’t work that way.
Ontheroad · M
@CookieCrumbs Exactly! And, funnily enough, the less I expect, the happier those happy moments are.

To me being content means I have found happiness.
Indy74 · 46-50, F
Being content is first and foremost for me!! ☺️
TrashCat · M
If I am content, then I am happy
If I am happy I am content
I cannot differentiate the two
I live my life, moment by moment
Today is tomorrows yesterday
Gratitude implies that happiness and contentment is at the mercy of another's generosity therefore it's external

I want contentnemt

I totally agree with you and have a lot I could say on the subject if I felt better. But here's a post explaining my thoughts, just as a reference, no comments expected...

Umile · 41-45, F
Contentment is happiness no ???

Content.
TexChik · F
I am happy that I am content 😌😌😌😘
HannahSky · F
Content. Happiness is fleeting.
I believe (for me) that content might just be more achievable. 🙂
@LordShadowfire I understand. I’ve had neither for awhile, now and was simply agreeing with him. 😞
Ontheroad · M
@bijouxbroussard I suspected that was the case... it took me a long, long time to get to content. Too many events that sapped the happiness out of life and it took me a long spell to understand what I was searching for was contentment... then I had to find my way there.

I wish that for you... the feeling of being content with oneself and life. It makes those fleeting happy moments all the richer.
@Ontheroad Thank you. 🥹
I would be happiest if I were content.
Content, definitely.
