Partly, the media allows you to learn of them, we are better able to diagnose them, we travel much more and thus there is a higher likelihood of global movement of illnesses.
It takes an astute physician or other health care person, to make the initial diagnosis before a disease spreads. The first victim that died on the cruise ship was in his 60s and was said to have died of "natural causes" by the ship's doctor. It was only later after others had dies, that the true diagnosis was made.

We have had Hantavirus in Arizona for many, many years. Deer mice are a main carrier.
