In college, I destroyed my knee, completely tearing the ACL, MCL, and medial meniscus, but I could still walk and even run with minor pain. The doctor was shocked when he opened my knee to repair what he thought was one simple tear. He told me it was impossible for me to run or even walk without excruciating pain. He never believed I was playing basketball the day before the surgery.
