A first degree burn hurts, and reddens the skin. It's like a sunburn.

A second degree burn causes blisters and damages the skin and goes still deeper to damage the dermis, which is the layer below the skin. Blistering, weeping of fluids from the area, and intense pain can result.

A third degree burn goes right through the skin and the dermis, to the layers of fat and bone below. The area may appear charred, or leathery. You must go immediately to the ER if you have a third degree burn. Skin grafts may be necessary and long term rehabilitation.
