Depression really exists. It has a measurable biochemical basis. Changes in levels of serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine are associated with depression. The fact that it has a biochemical basis explains why it can be successfully treated with pharmaceuticals.

@ElwoodBlues Yet we don't know that the biochemical nature is from thoughts or not. I've never seen a well taken care of depressed toddler, have you?

@Angelwarfare Some conditions are specific to certain developmental stages or to aging. Sure there are definite connections between biochemistry and thought, but once the biochemistry of depression begins, you can't "change your mind" and have it instantly disappear.

"Some conditions are specific to certain developmental stages or to aging"
Which ones? Are you referring to dementia?
I have clinical depression and ptsd, when I'm extremely depressed, it most definitely is difficult to pull myself out of it but it happens and I don't take pharmaceuticals to do so. I do use cannabis to help (not all the time). I think a lot of what we see in psychology today is influenced by big pharma. The motto being: you can't change who you are so buy our expensive drugs. It's a band-aid.

@Angelwarfare Depression existed long before prozac, and people did usually pull out of it over time. I'm glad to hear weed is helpful; I certainly don't want to be pushing pharmaceuticals. I merely brought them up in light of the biochemical connection.
@ElwoodBlues How would we know they didn't usually pull out of it though? I understand what you're saying, I don't take any offense, not trying to accuse you of being a drug-pusher. I'm simply expressing my opinion and lived experience.

@Angelwarfare In the past people were institutionalized, and/or experimented upon surgically. 😞
ElwoodBlues · M
@Angelwarfare I intended to say people usually DID pull out of depression over time.
@bijouxbroussard I know! Psychiatry and medicine were filled with all sorts of horrors!
@ElwoodBlues Thanks for clarifying, appreciate it, it's really hard to know without a large volume of scientific data. Idk about you guys but I'm questioning data a lot these days (same with recorded history), it's so hard to know what is really true and what isn't. When there is financial motive and the possibility of deception, you have to wonder.
I've studied a lot of science in university, I absolutely love the scientific method. There is no disputing that science has brought great things to the world but I question anything that allowed to be questioned and is fiercely protected.

@ElwoodBlues EDIT: without* a large volume of data. 😂 Damn typos/fingers/brain.
