To any doctors on here who live in places where pot is legal

Have you seen an increase in people coming in for issues related to using marijuana? If yes how bad is it?

It's a complicated issue because there are so many factors to consider. Medically speaking, some studies have indicated a rise in ER visits due to cannabis use. Also to be considered are brain development, use disorders and co-occurring disorders.

A person can't "OD" on cannabis, though there are better and worse experiences. Each of the harmful effects seen can in some way be explained. For instance, increased ER visits includes everything from a perceived overdose to a car accident involving cannabis. A fall from a wall may involve cannabis, and so on.

Brain development is an ongoing issue, but the evidence is fairly clear that when started in adolescence, cannabis poses the greatest risks. The human brain isn't considered fully developed until around age 25; start regular cannabis use before that, and you could have some long-term effects.

Believe it or not, cannabis is addictive. About 10% of the time, someone walks into a physical addiction and that creates an entirely new issue. It's rare, but it's something to be aware of, especially for those with a family history of mental illness and addiction.

There have been cases of psychosis, but here's a crucial point: It's currently believed that while cannabis may agitate and worsen existing mental health problems (previously diagnosed or not), it doesn't actually create them. In short, pot doesn't cause psychosis; it may wake it up. And no, cannabis is not considered a "gateway drug" anymore.

There's smoke v. vaping v. edibles and all that. It's a large discussion but cannabis isn't going to fade back into the background, so it's in our best interest to manage and understand it.

[Incidentally, I'm not a doctor - I'll think you'll find those hard to come by here - but do work in the field.]

@Souls I'm a daily smoker of medical marijuana. So you're wrong there.
Because something is less deadly (you specific number is nonsense) doesn't make it healthy. So you're wrong there.
Alcohol and tobacco are deficiently more deadly than marijuana, that's the point of the post. Alcohol is less deadly than fentanyl. Fentanyl is less deadly that carfentinil. What reasoning are you using, exactly?
And believe it or not, you are not smarter than the focused scientific community. So you're wrong there. too.

I support legalization of all drugs, certainly marijuana. But just like I wouldn't tell a person to enjoy the ocean without mentioning the possibility of danger, I wouldn't jump headlong into the "drugs are natural, dude" pond, either. And legal has nothing at all to do with healthy.
@Graylight
Marijuana is roughly 114 times less deadly than alcohol. Some studies suggest that tobacco and alcohol may be more detrimental to your health than marijuana.
My "specific number " is not nonsense it is based on studies! Don't confuse facts with opinion. Do your research since you know nothing about marijuana but your proud to state you smoke it, congratulations!

@Souls Post the citation, please. Surely there's a particular research article you're thinking of.

I do the research. That's part of my profession. What you think matters little to me because it's nothing more than the sound of an ant when passing by.

You don't know what you don't know, and that will service to keep in a lifetime of ignorance. But hey, you'll look all cool & edgy, right?

Also, looking at your profile, you're little more than a troll.

@Souls idk I read about an increase in hospitalizations due to accidents and cases of psychosis. I don't personally believe it, but would still like to hear the doctors who work in legal places opinions on it.
@Sweetguy024 For both recreational and medicinal purposes, marijuana has been legalized in 39 states I don't believe there has been an increase in hospitalization due to accidents and cases of psychosis

@Souls I smoke everyday n so do most people I know n none of us have ever had to go to the hospital for it. Also doesn't make any of us go crazy or anything, although I do feel people who are already schizophrenic shouldn't use it
