Does anyone here suffer from anemia?

I noticed it again maybe 2 or 3 months ago when my hair started drying out and breaking. So mum really had to cut my hair. I thought I was getting on top of things by eating better. But I've noticed a white ring around my mouth. My lips are always dry and go white.

I'm going to start the high does of iron tablets today but if you can recommend any tips I'd really appreciate it!

My mother suffered from what was called "Pernicious" anemia, and had to have injections of B12 once a month. Later on, her condition improved, but she did have to continue to take ALL of the B vitamins. She had to take iron, folate, and B complex vitamins.

Iron tablets are very hard on the stomach, so don't forget to eat first and have a cup of milk before you take them.

If you find iron tablets are too difficult for your stomach, you should begin to include leafy dark green vegetables in your diet every day, and try to add in more lamb or beef and beans such as kidney beans, garbanzos, or hummus.

@Mellowgirl You are very welcome, and be sure to keep graphite's note in mind. If you have a small internal bleed you might always suffer from anemia until it is repaired.

@4meAndyou I have many different issues pcos, ibs and anemia.
I'm taking antidepressants but my anxiety has started to rear its ugly head along the other things I've mentioned, i can't imagine it's a bleed but the diagnosis was missed because my appointments are over the phone with gand they don't think I need to get blood test! Idiot! I'm just gonna take these and keep a diary.

@Mellowgirl Good idea, dear. You are your own best advocate for the best health.

I take an iron supplement that has raspberry extract in it because it’s easy on my digestion and the iron absorbs much better. Also if you can get some concentrated chlorophyll (Cloroxygen brand is a good one and good price since it’s concentrated) that is really good to give you energy and help the iron to absorb. I didn’t know I was getting anemic and was on the highest altitude mountain in Africa and got so short of breath I couldn’t make it to the top and it wasn’t that far. When I got home I started taking iron & chlorophyll & it helped a lot but took time to build up my iron. I didn’t know it at the time but I was using 2 different shades of lipstick made by L’Oreal that were contaminated with lead. After they stopped making & selling them & I stopped using them my iron levels built up good and then I found them on a consumer list of lipsticks that were found to have lead in them.

@4meAndyou I don’t even think the Dollar Tree lipsticks are that bad. I thought L’Oreal was a good brand, they make enough money they could have the pigments tested. I have thought for the longest time that this contamination of foods, packaging, cosmetics, hygiene and cleaning products is being done deliberately by corporations with the blessing of the FDA so that we are slowly poisoned and have to get medical intervention. The big pharmaceutical companies are profiting heavily off of it.

@cherokeepatti The FDA is a joke. When I found out that their newly appointed CEO...(appointed by the GOVERNMENT!!!), was the former CEO that blessed us all with the poisonous Roundup weedkiller, I knew the agency was being bought.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@4meAndyou FDA officials accepted free junkets (trips to places like Las Vegas and Hawaii) paid for by the pharmaceutical companies and that was exposed on 60 Minutes years ago.

please see a doctor and tell him your personal history. the doctor can diagnose you. it is not wise to take a large amount of Iron.
Careful:

Excessive iron can be damaging to the gastrointestinal system. Symptoms of iron toxicity include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pain. Over time, iron can accumulate in the organs, and cause fatal damage to the liver or brain. As red cells break down over time, the iron in the hemoglobin is released. Your body has no natural way to rid itself of excess iron, so extra iron is stored in body tissues. That's why patients receiving transfusions are at risk for iron overload.

A blood test for Iron Content will tell you what you need to know before randomly popping iron tablets.

A ferritin (FAIR-eh-tin) test (blood test) helps doctors know how much iron is stored in the body. Iron is needed to make red blood cells, so when ferritin levels are low, the body makes fewer red blood cells. But Ferritin levels can be high with some medical conditions.

@Threepio my gp won't send me for bloods. Its pissing me off!
@Mellowgirl Call the testing site and ask how much it would be for "private" pay. IDK about there, but here, we usually get a big discount for private 'cash' payment. You can even order ANY test you want to have done.

I have the same issue!

I had to incorporate iron in my diet! and liquid iron helps a lot.
stay away from caffeine whilst you are taking it.

Best thing to do is a daily check. it really helped me, every morning I think what can I eat or drink that has iron, so I try and incorporate that in the day.

I have the same issue with my hair and my lips at the moment, and I am getting fed up of using Vaseline lol

everything you have said I am going through, I even had the ambulance come out and check my heart through an ECG, I even rang the doctor that day to say I need to see someone urgently, but they passed it off.

I'm sorry your doctor has missed it, that's really bad! please could you write the practice manager a letter and insist on taking a blood test to then give you the best course of medicine. If you want me to write it, I will!!! it worked for Gem and her ears!

But to be honest, you can self manage which I do. the posts on here are really helpful and always here for any advice xx @Mellowgirl

@Gangstress Well I went to boots today. I am over sleeping too it's too much. My body can't cope I know I've been bad with my fitness but not like this. Lets see how I get on with these tablets.
Gangstress · 41-45, F
honestly B, this sounds so like me atm! I have had to take massive steps to start getting back together again1
I hope they work sweet @Mellowgirl

I've had serious issues with it. Turned out it was intestinal bleeding. See about an endoscopy or enteroscopy, to seal the wounds. (Although anemia is much more common in women, so your diagnosis may be different)
xNicolax1 · 36-40, F
Yes I’m vegetarian to which makes it harder. I have been given iron tablets to take 3 times a day. Try and eat and drink things that will boost it up. Meat, beans, leafy vegetables.
Yup. Mines from severe anorexia, though. So, I just need to eat.

@DarkHeaven A statement that carries an ocean of struggle. Hope you're winning the good fight today.
@Graylight trying.

It could be indicative of another problem-have bloodwork done.
