Any diabetics out there? I have a question about Metformin.

If you are prescribed Metformin, and you are told that you have the "mild" sort of diabetes that does not require shots, can you still eat whatever you want as long as you take the Metformin?

I am asking because this is what the ex told me. He indulged in huge meals with bread and pasta, and ate enormous ice cream sundaes AFTER he told me he had diabetes. He told me he didn't have to worry about what he ate...that the medication would handle all of it.

I am asking, also, because yesterday I learned that Metformin can also be prescribed for people who have schizophrenia, or psychosis, and it never occurred to me that the ex was lying to me.

This is my fact check.

My wife has mild diabetes and she takes metformin, but if she does not watch her diet she will likely progress to the more serious kind where she needs insulin shots. She monitors both the amount of carbs and the timing of her food intake very carefully. She actually has a measuring cup at the table, and she informs me down to the minute when it is OK for her to have supper.

@DrWatson I guess I am just freaked out. I've been freaked out for a long time about my marriage and the things that happened, but finding out that this drug is often prescribed for schizophrenics and psychotics who DON'T have diabetes put me in major doubt.

@4meAndyou Whoops. My wife takes so many drugs for different things, that I might have them mixed up. She is psychotic and has been in the psych ward. She takes metformin, but I probably got it mixed up with whatever she is taking for diabetes since your post talked about metformin and diabetes together. I apologize.

But still, it is the case that she has to be careful of her diet, or she will progress to needing insulin.

@DrWatson It's used for BOTH things...diabetes AND psychosis. I never saw the ex try to control his sugar or his carbs...and now I am just about convinced that he was taking it for his nutty condition.

@4meAndyou Ohhhhh....I didn't quite understand what you were asking about, but now that makes sense.

Of course, many people with this kind of diabetes will still not try to watch their diet, because a lot of people have no sense of thinking in the long term.

@DrWatson Well, there is no way for me to know...ever...and I shouldn't care.
