Why do Americans pronounce the word 'pasta' in such a strange way?

Given the apparent influence of Italian-Americans on American culture it really seems to be a linguistic oddity.

Then there are people who say 'Fertographer', 'Expecially' , 'Heighth' and 'Auld Lang Zyne'.

@Really And "jaguar" becomes "jag-wire" for some reason.

@ChipmunkErnie Some sources say the word 'jaguar' comes from "the South American Tupi, or the related Guaraní from Paraguay." In Tupi language, the original word is yaguara.

Others say it is originally a Portugese word. You can hear it pronounced here:

@Really Gee, I don't think I've ever met a Portuguese jaguar. They have an accent, eh? ;)

The Portuguese were early European explorers in the Americas. No doubt they used their own name - jaguar - for the animal in question. Nowadays everybody says 'jaguar' but It's probably a Portuguese spelling of the earlier Tupi word.

You've probably been in an American 'restaurant'? The word is French but it's used all over the world. 😊

@Really Yup, the Pope told the Portuguese they could have Brazil, but the Spanish got the rest of the New World.
