I think I want to replace my doom scrolling with the gym...
Social media and all of the depressing news and stuff has had a pretty bad impact on my mental health lately. Unfortunately, I just don't have much to do in the evenings after work that doesn't require spending money (I live in a pretty slow paced place with not that many great amenities, and I'm trying to save my money and not constantly browse stores, go out to eat, etc.), and I find myself being so bored that I just doom scroll, and I'm so sick of being fed stuff about death, civil unrest, tragedy, people and animals hurting, the Lindsay Clancy stuff, etc. It's really souring my view of the world.
Well, I already have a gym membership and have been taking a couple of classes, and now I think, since I want to get in shape and have been feeling pretty down and not really doing as well with that as I'd like, I think I might just go over to the gym whenever the temptation to scroll hits me. I desperately need more exercise, it's been way too hot where I am to go walk outside like I normally like to, and I'm free of distractions at the gym.
I've had the silly fear that I'll somehow be judged or look silly or something, but I mean, I'm there to improve, right? I'm sure most people are busy focusing on their own workouts, anyway. But it's been really hard to commit to working out at home, so maybe it will be better at the gym with fewer distractions. I already have the membership for the classes and it's a low cost per month.
I don't even know what I'm getting at, I guess I just needed to think out loud, and actually write this to help solidify a plan...
But, has anyone tried something like this, and has it helped you get out of a mental fog/low point?
