If your teenage kid was unfairly verbally attacked by a relative, would you defend him or would you think, "he needs to learn to defend himself?"

I would yeah, I’m very protective over them.
@Fairydust That's good! You're a good mom!!! ❤️

Ohhhh I would defend the hell out of them. That’s how they learn it’s okay to stand up for themselves.

Blood and teeth would fly.

It would depend on the situation.
Nah, I'd speak up.
Probably try and defend him/her as reasoning skills have not fully developed in the teenage years. Of course I would encourage expressing an opinion rather than remaining totally quiet.

Il shut groups of ppl up just so my niece can get a word in
It depends on who did the attacking and why.

If anyone verbally attacked my teen kid in front of me or I found out about it being a relative wouldnt mean shit to me. It is my job to protect him and I dont care what age he is or how capable he is to defend himself (he is very capable) I will always defend and protect him.

Unfairly... Meaning?

If he did not defend himself/herself, I would defend them. And call them out for not defending themself. Letting the relative know that that shit is unsat and they are being green lighted to tell them to go fuck themselves.
I'd get them out of the situation and talk to them. Probably then just avoid seeing the relative again.

Feel escalating the situation wouldn't help

It depends on the issue, the relative, and the language used.
