@Chern0bylplaygr0unds I had a lady say "Praise God" when someone was going through some really bad stuff, and I vowed I would never be that person.
We do not get to decide how people feel or respond.
As a Christian, I know
Even Jesus wept.
He knew what the more appropriate response was.

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout I like realists.
Some people do have a cheerier outlook on life.
Other people have depression, but I understand how depressing that can be to others, I try to isolate in those times, only reaching out to people I trust.

It depends on whether unhappiness is a reaction to an event, or a state of being.
It IS a choice. If circumstances make you unhappy, change your circumstances. If you can’t or won’t change them, then don’t inflict your choices on everyone in proximity. It’s nobody else’s fault if I married the wrong man and chose to stay.
In some cases, it’s a life molded by religious beliefs. That is none of my business. In others, it’s a matter of life balance. Okay, I married unwisely, which was unhappy. But I got a wonderful child out of it, a great son-in-law and a step-grandchild.
It can also be camouflage. If I don’t want to admit/share that everything in my life is not perfect, that’s my business. I will find happiness where I can, which is primarily in public, if home life sucks.
My stance on this is, unless I think there is violence or some other form of coercion, I will evaluate a person on how they present.
Plot shift: people who act UNhappy are not always truthful, either.

I think we are attracted and accept ideas that are closest to our own without even thinking about it sometimes.
And by default we end up dismissing people who don't have the same perspective on life or the same experiences.
We miss a lot when we do that but it's almost hardwired into us.

Its better than crying all day and talking about wanting to die
@SkeetSkeet but i want to write my dark poetry

I don't usually, but then I stay secluded if I am depressed as my misery doesn't crave company.
There are times when being down doesn't help in the situation you are in .
I am not saying you have to act giddy or bubbly, but sometimes you have to act professionally or have calmness for the situation you find yourself in.
I have stuffed my feelings down as a trauma response, but nobody ever accused me of acting happy all the time.

I did this for years.
In my mind, it made me more likeable, it made my unhappiness less.
If I was making people smile then I wasn't as worthless as I often felt, less a victim.
It's not sustainable.
It catches up with you in one way or another.
I don't know if it's a trauma response or self protection.

@Mindfulness I can understand this

It can be. I don't think there's ever just one overarching answer when it comes to human behaviour. One persons trauma response can be another person's copying mechanism. Everyone's baseline is different.
@HijabaDabbaDoo that's true

If they fake it, maybe they make it. I don't know
WillaKissing · 61-69, M
Usually, the happiest acting folks are the saddest and they use it to mask their sadness and depression and sadness.
Example: Robbin Williams, Jim Carry, most comedians.

Maybe they crazy? 😜
Sometimes it is. If you’re taught that your feelings are not important you stop sharing them and hide behind a smile.
WanderingHelplessly · 51-55, M
It's a trauma response. Mainly, you don't feel that your pain is valued. The thinking: "No one cares, and people hate unhappy people. "
WaryWitchWandering · 36-40, F
I think so. I think they are people who were met with annoyance, anger, or disgust by their parents if they were anything BUT a positive presence. Maybe these people were even parentified as children… expected to help make a parent(s) feel better constantly?
Just some guesses/ideas in my mind

I never completely understood it either as it's not something I do.
Could be their armor / protection as don't want to seem weak or be embarrassed? Maybe it's unhealthy suppression of real feelings they don't want to feel or accept.

It can be a trauma response, but you’d need to understand what’s driving the behaviour before calling it one.
Sometimes it’s a coping mechanism people develop from learning that showing sadness, anger, or vulnerability feels unsafe, uncomfortable, or burdensome to others. It can also come from people pleasing, emotional masking, wanting to maintain peace, or simply being a naturally private person.
A trauma response is more likely when the “I’m fine” behaviour feels automatic or necessary for safety, even when the person is struggling badly underneath.

I'm as clueless as you are. For me it would be impossible to act happy when I am not. The most I could do is a neutral face. Maybe their overall philosophy is fake it till you make it.
PerfectionOfTheHeart · 46-50, F
I’m that person in public because I know everyone has their problems so the last thing I want to do is put that kind of funk out in the air. I also can’t stand pity at all. I’d rather fake happiness than experience an ounce of it.
icedsky · 51-55, M
It's camouflage
Denial is a pretty strong defense mechanism
