I have heard theories that it was to thin out aging population

Bluster.
I am surprised someone in his position would come out with hyperbole like that before the Public Inquiry is anywhere near completed and its Report published.
It is emerging that the UK government (I can't speak for others) were out of their depth with it, partly because far too many politicians know so little science and about science even at lay level. Nevertheless I would expect intemperate language from a "red-top" newspaper, not a serious medical journal!

Language like that will help no-one and I can't help thinking that's the writer's political rather than medical views.
Of course it it is right to scrutinise the Government's handling of the pandemic and it does have tough questions to answer. Not though merely to find illusory scapegoats in a spirit of vengeance, but so we may work out how better to handle the next epidemic or pandemic.
Yet that must be done in a proper manner, not by inflammatory editorials in trade-magazines (or "social"[?]-media).
Does this editor not know there is a Public Inquiry in progress to do just that?

Absolutely. There was a decision to be made about the economy vs human lives, and they went with human lives.
They, being the government and power capitalists, would kill every one of us to keep a handful of people in yacht money. We are bugs on a windshield to them.
