Why do people just leave in the middle of a good conversation without saying goodbye?
And does it make me old fashioned that it pisses me off when they do?

No, it doesn't make you old-fashioned. It is very rude of them.
I am not impressed either by people who regard their 'phones as more important than the others in the room with whom they should be socialising.
