Why do people just leave in the middle of a good conversation without saying goodbye?

And does it make me old fashioned that it pisses me off when they do?

Did they have a prior engagement or appointment somewhere else but they still should have explained where they had to go and that they enjoyed their conversation with you and hope to continue on at another time
