Once you are awared of you being overprotective...you can take action. I'm sure it doesn't matter if it's a girl or a boy but I know what you mean. My father was overprotective with my sister and me. But he also was with my brother, although not in such a grade.
Surely, you are a very affectionable person and this is very good to grow up a kid. A kid learn mainly with affection and care. Feeling safe. And little by little, even when it hurst letting him being him and doing his own mistakes.

Adoption is about compatibility. Consideration has to be given to matching the child's culture with your own. I can tell you from personal experience that our culture isn't just something we grow into; it is formed (at least in part) in our genes. So, even when adopted as a baby, the growing child can feel 'different'.
