Is it wrong to call women "Sweetheart" on the phone?

I work as a telephone agent. My last caller insisted on calling me "sweetheart" during the call. He was an older gentleman. I get this from time to time, especially from older men in the American South. When guys talk like that, I feel a mix of feelings as a woman, both valued but also patronized.

Do you think it's good or bad when men talk to women this way? Why do you think so?

only time I'll put up with it is when I stop at some truck stop diner in the middle of nowhere and there's some hick waitress ambling around with a pot of coffee saying 'more coffee hun?' then I eat that shit up. otherwise GTFO.
carpediem61-69, M
@lumberjackslam I wonder if that waitress would appreciate being referred to as a "hick". 馃檮

@lumberjackslam you鈥檙e not a woman
lumberjackslam41-45, M
@carpediem I wouldn't say that! maybe doll or dollface.
lumberjackslam41-45, M
@SW-User OK. thanks for noticing.
carpediem61-69, M
@lumberjackslam Just so you know, because she's out in the "middle of nowhere" does not mean she can be looked down upon. The term "hick" is derogatory whether or not you call her that. She's a person like any other and deserves the same respect as someone from an urban environment, or wherever.

If a server calls me "hon", I understand it's her way of sharing her sweet and happy disposition. It generally makes my day and she gets a larger than 20% tip.
lumberjackslam41-45, M
@carpediem well anyways I was just describing her regional origin in simple terms.
carpediem61-69, M
@lumberjackslam I see it as if you were using a derogatory term for an African American to describe an urban region. Not cool. But I get it. No harm done.
lumberjackslam41-45, M
@carpediem hick doesn't refer to black people, generally. it could, but it refers to region and general economic status not race
SW-User
@carpediem this one isn鈥檛 worth your time it seems
lumberjackslam41-45, M
@SW-User gee thanks. I'm not worth your time.
carpediem61-69, M
@SW-User Obviously. He doesn't seem to get it.

@lumberjackslam @carpediem @SW-User I don't think of "hick" as a racial term at all, or if anything, I would tend to assume a "hick" is probably white. But it does have negative connotations. I take your point, Lumberjack, but I agree that there are probably more respectful ways to say it.

But you bring up a good point here about CONTEXT. I wouldn't be bothered in a diner. Less formality is okay there. It's still not language I would use with others, but that says more about me than about the situation. No, I think my issue with it today had to do with it being on a business call.

@carpediem
He doesn't seem to get it.
He gets it, he is just too arrogant/prideful to care or even consider adopting another, more well-adjusted point of view. Typical American behavior.
SW-User
@ShadowSister yeah we went off on a tangent sorry
lumberjackslam41-45, M
@SW-User Everyone here seems to be American 馃槄 do you have identity disorder?
SW-User
@lumberjackslam I actually doand that probably doesn鈥檛 help my case
ShadowSister46-50, F
@lumberjackslam I'm pretty sure all Americans are idiots. But that's not a function of us being American, it's a function of us being human. 馃ぃ
SW-User
@ShadowSister it has a lot to do with them being American too I think
lumberjackslam41-45, M
@ShadowSister he should be trained better than that, working on the phone
ShadowSister46-50, F
@lumberjackslam To be clear, I'm the telephone agent. He's the customer. To him, maybe it felt a little more like the diner experience.
