Is it wrong to call women "Sweetheart" on the phone?

I work as a telephone agent. My last caller insisted on calling me "sweetheart" during the call. He was an older gentleman. I get this from time to time, especially from older men in the American South. When guys talk like that, I feel a mix of feelings as a woman, both valued but also patronized.

Do you think it's good or bad when men talk to women this way? Why do you think so?

No honey. I really don't see what the deal is but perhaps it depends what part of the world ones from.

@SW-User "No honey." Nice.

The deal is, I feel like it's part of a culture that believes in treating men and women differently. They would say (I think) that you should treat a lady like a lady. But I also sometimes feel like it can become a thinly-veiled excuse for misogyny. But I will be the first to say that maybe I am being too sensitive. That's why I asked.

@ShadowSister It would be the same to me if someone had an issue with being called bud/buddy/mate/dude/my guy etc... it just doesn't make any sense to me but fair enough.

@SW-User Ah that makes sense. Thanks dude! 😀

@ShadowSister 😂 Anytime!
@ShadowSister Both men and women (not all) use those terms here and I assure you they mean no harm. Culture and the spirit behind the word is what needs to be looked at here! It’s certainly not meant to demean you at least in these parts around here.

@NoGamesTolerated I'm sure that's all that was going on. It was just very out-of-my-comfort-zone as a Yankee girl 😆

@ShadowSister But don't call me "bro" 🫵🏻😠
@ShadowSister I totally get that… same as in NYC or PA.

@SW-User I'll keep that in mind
