Oh, come on, Slade... [i]that[/i] Barbie was a war criminal, sentenced to death (in absentia) by the French.
When they finally got their hands on him, he was an old man. They commuted his death sentence to life in prison, where he died of natural causes about four years later.
Before that, Barbie was protected by American (and West German) intelligence, because of his knowledge of Soviet efforts to infiltrate the French government.

If you have to admire a Nazi, Otto Skorzeny would be a better choice. Not only was he not a mass murderer, but he was so talented that after WW2, his services were used by the Americans, the Egyptians, and (it is claimed), even by the Mossad.
