They care to a point, in general. If it's a stranger, they generally feel they have a mlral obligation to do something to try to help. They will attempt to do so in order to justify their self-labeling as a "good person." Once they have invested some arbitrary amount of time, they will almost inevitably come to the conclusion that they can't fix someone's life with words. So, having invested said amount of time, they can abandon the stranger with a clean conscious. "I did everything i could."
For people they know, people will invest ad much effort as they see the person as worth. Im nit sure about the exact parameters of your question, but there it goes.
Though, scientists had thought in the past that humans were entirely selfish creatures, incaoable of feeling empathy. Turns out, that's not true. A part of the brain dedicated to empathy was found. So, we're entirely selfish with the capacity to feel empathy.

No. I don't believe that's the premise of the show either. It's more that people are so good at hiding things, it's very difficult to figure out when someone is feeling that way a lot of the time. And at the end of the day, if someone wants to die that badly sometimes there really isn't anything the people who love them can do

@loveyourselfalways00 She didn't want to die, she was looking for a reason to live, and couldnt find one. So when she thought about ending her life she felt no-one really cared that she actually wanted to live.
loveyourselfalways00 · 22-25, F
@RichiNatural97: Yeah of course, but I don't think that was anyone's (out of the people who loved her of course) fault because she was depressed which alters your perception of things. Of course she was failed, and in the context of show everyone did do wrong by her at some point. However I have a problem with that being applied to everyone ever - because people do always care, they just sometimes show it the wrong way/don't realise the impact they have. (again, not talking about rape or any of the genuine horrific things Hannah went through)

I haven't seen that show, but from my own experiences I've learned that most people genuinely care and will actively and forcefully stop a person from ending their life. Even when the person says "Get off of me! You're hurting my arm!" and "Why are you giving me so many pills? Stop it!"

That's not what the show is about. She hid the fact that she was gonna do anything from pretty much everyone. No one even knew she was depressed besides the counselor
RichiNatural97 · 26-30, M
@Anonsmiles even if it was just the counselor, he said just get over it. Lol Im sure she cried for help many times in the show but no-one really give it any attention. Everyone turned on her when they should of cared. Everyone was imperfect, as we all are, which give her reasons to end her life. No?

Same old responsibility shifting ploy! The depressed need to stop blaming others for acting and not acting.

@Peekaboo: You dont know what you do in a helpless situation. You ever been depressed?
