Why are things—like murder—seen as way worse when women are involved?

For example: If a group of people are murdered, people are more shocked and sad when finding out some were women.

I guess maybe because for a long time, women weren't ever fighters, like they weren't allowed to be knights in medieval times or they weren't cavalry (except for the Mongols) or archers or whatever else. So people I guess thought that since women weren't fighters with weapons and stuff, it was even more despicable to kill them because they didn't have any chance to defend themselves.
