Programs encouraging more women to get into it as well as gradual cultural shifts away from discouraging girls from said career paths.

@silmarilion456: None of the female programmers I know were pushed into it, and I know 3 of them well and got to know about a dozen as acquaintances in college. What makes you think they were pushed into it?

@Mountainlady16: Some places hold out longer than others but no one can resist the tides of change forever.

@UndeadPrivateer: very true though we live right outside of a city though id say more of down the middle than actually liberal or conservative that city. our town act touches that city the only thing that seperates us is the state line but yet many people say crossing that state line is like going 20 years back in time maybe longer. like for instance we still in our town live in neighborhoods by race for the most part.

Liberals. They're destroying traditional families by making good housewives harder and harder to find.

I'm not sure there is a "significant increase." Women have been earning more post-graduate degrees than men in some STEM fields for a while. They're just not as well represented overall in the work force. That's a choice, not a lack of opportunity. I think there's a myriad of reasons why it's increasing though. Society, technology and, most importantly, desire.

They're becoming more interested in those fields.

More of a belief that it's okay to have those interests, and more opportunities for an education and career in those fields. When I was in school, some counselors actually discouraged the girls who did have an interest in math and sciences.
