People are curious why am I in a wheelchair.

@AuthoroftheFuture: so, they stare? Wheelchairs are so common these days, even on public transport, there doesn't seem any reason to stare. It's just part of life.

Yes, people stare at me because of it. People are curious.

@AuthoroftheFuture: curiosity is not a bad thing, but staring is rude. Does it bother you when they stare? Wouldn't you rather they strike up a conversation?

@Serenitree: It doesn't bother me. I'm used to it. They don't start a conversation.

@AuthoroftheFuture: I've never started a conversation with someone because they're in a wheelchair, because that would be a different kind of discrimination, but I don't feel the need to stare either. Perhaps it's because I grew up from the time I was born, until I was 11 years old with a neighbour who was in a wheelchair, and my very first job ever was to go every day that the weather permitted and get him and take him to the corner store for an ice cream cone, and feed it to him and wipe his face and clean him up and take him home to his mom. He was a profoundly disabled young man, with the sweetest disposition. I was his best friend, according to his mom. He couldn't speak, but he could smile. Oh my, how that man could smile. His joy when I arrived made my heart swell.
