Can being way too nice and passive cause you to lose friends?

That's what has been happening to me. My friends say if I can't be honest with my feelings and keep sugarcoating and agreeing to protect our feels then we shouldn't be friends. How can they say that? It seems like mean people have more friends than nice passive people.
