Optimally, I try to meditate. This usually includes something to fixate on like a burning candle and some practice. I like to focus on a candle in reality or in my minds eye. If a thought intrudes, acknowledge it and let it go. I find it helpful to imagine burning it in the flame. At first this is absurdly difficult. After a couple month's of practice you will be able to turn your brain off in seconds.

@Sunujing: meditation? I have tried tried it but failed.

The key to success for me was lots of short session. Formal sessions should start at 5 minutes and every time I would get up to go to the bathroom I would try and shut off my brain. Within two months I could meditate for an hour and walk away ultra refreshed. Radically improved my ability to fall asleep. A few cleansing breaths and if a candle is too hard to visualize, just try a mass of gray or black enveloping you.

Check out YouTube. In my case I was trying to preserve my marriage. I tried not thinking about how much I hated my wife. It worked for several years. I have some regrets.
On a happier note, There are some great guided meditations for beginners on YouTube. Check out SamdhiForPeace. It is tough to stop thinking. That is literally meditation though and I remember thinking the acknowledge a thought and let it go sounded stupid and impossible. I found the trick with the flame helped as the letting it go was easier as I imagined it burning up.
Good luck to you
