No. Your friends are right. Here's some interesting facts I think will be very useful to you.

It is the extreme religions that is the problem. Religion is man-made philosophies. That's why they don't work.

In religions, you have man creating his own God. That's idolatry.
In religion, you have man trying to earn his salvation by "good works".
While Jesus tells us it is only by grace through faith, that we're saved.
No other religions have a living God, that hears prayers and answers.
In addition, none of the other gods died on the cross for our sins. Jesus did. In religions, there is rhetoric or rituals that have to be closely adhered to. Other religions are about man trying to reach up to God. Christianity is about God reaching down to man.

I would suggest that you approach this with an [i][b]objective[/b][/i] and critical eye like you would with most things that are new to you. Don't buy into something you don't yet understand. I'm sure your colleague had good intentions, but it would be wise to do your research and make sure it's "right for you" before you dive into a new religion.

If you think you can find correct answers about what is infinitely all around you within the small confines of a mere book, then you will.

Its up to you. Keep an open mind and let the faith speak for itself. Just be careful with anything you choose to believe in/follow.

Being a Muslim, I can say for sure that you will find peace

When I went to church I felt peaceful, probably because I had to sit and do nothing for an hour or so. It didn't change my opinion of the church or Christianity, but it was peaceful...
