Firstly ,
Stop trying to forget that person- the more effort you put , the more you remember about that person.
In the meantime , engage in your favourite hobby , take up a project and do it! Go out with friends and have fun! !

heavy exercise. let the endorphins kick in.
but think about them. think about the good and smile - but remember that there were sad times as well. things that were unpleasant - be fair in your assessment.
grieve a little, cry, get mad if you want to.
feel what you have to feel
it'll get better in time

I face the reality of it. What does that person mean to me? How is my relationship with that person? How do I think it is? What should it be? Measure the value of it, then decide if it would be worth it in the long run or just irrational obsessivism.

@Meisje: The root issue could possibly be that you lack faith in yourself. Otherwise your thoughts wouldn't jump to irrational conclusions. I don't mean that as an insult.

@TheObservatory: I never claimed I have irrational conclusions. Missing someone and thinking about them often means thinking of fond memories and positively of that person. It doesn't necessarily have to be negative or reveal insecurities. It could for some, but not in my case.

@Meisje: Good to know that, however positivity is also considered irrational. However thats just my opinion. I hope you solve the issue.☺

You can know that person is always with you in spirit, even, and maybe especially, when they're not physically present. Distract yourself from missing them, but allow the thought of them to fill you, please you, delight you. Then, when you see that person again, your thoughts and their presence will dance.

Work, books, really anything else that engages my mind. I can't push that person out of my thoughts completely, but when I'm busy, the mental energy is at least directed at something.
Great question- but I certainely dont have the answer for it.

Reminds me of a line from a poem, something about going where I had no memory of him there only to regret we had made no memory there....

Sounds like a beautiful poem!
